The red panda tour.

Two nights inside one reserve in the Qionglai range south of Chengdu, spent on a single species: short walks into the forest, then stillness, at the time of year when the reserve's red pandas are finding easiest to see.

Why this route

Two days on red panda ground.

A red panda half-hidden among bare winter branches at Labahe Nature Reserve
Spotting is the skill: a red panda at Labahe in February, mostly branches

The plan is deliberately narrow: one reserve, one species, and enough hours inside the gate for the forest to produce the animal. Labahe sits deep in the mountains south of Ya'an — the drive from Chengdu is a large half-day — and the trip sleeps at the park hotel inside the reserve, so the first afternoon and both mornings belong to the pandas rather than to the road.

Red panda watching here is waiting at close range. The walking is short; the skill is standing still while the guide reads the bamboo. Sightings run from the second half of August into November, which is why this tour has a season rather than a calendar of dates.

It is a private departure — you choose when to come. If two days on the ground are not enough, Wawushan, a second working red panda forest nearby, turns the trip into four days.

The route

The line.

South out of Chengdu, two nights inside the gate at Labahe, and back. Three stages, one vehicle.

  1. Day 01Chengdu → Labahethe large half-day drive, first session by late afternoon
  2. Day 02Labahea full day of search and wait, Wawushan the fallback ground
  3. Day 03Labahe → Chengdumorning search, optional early start for monal, road home

Day by day

The three days.

Two nights inside the reserve. Each day lists where you sleep, how much road there is, and what the walking actually asks of you.

  1. Day 01

The road into the Qionglai range

    Chengdu → Labahe

Labahe is far into the mountains south of Ya'an, and the drive out of Chengdu takes a large half-day. The aim is to be at the park hotel by early afternoon — checked in, and up at the pandas' ground while the light is still good.

The whole rest of the day is spent inside the park, staying until sunset. With two nights at the same hotel there is nothing to pack and nothing to chase; the evening is yours.

Wawushan · the fallback ground, and the optional fourth day

A full day at the right places inside Labahe: short walks, then stillness, while the guide reads the bamboo for an animal that is resident here and in no hurry to be anywhere.

If the weather or the chance turns poor, the day moves. Wawushan, a second red panda forest nearby, is the fallback — the same ground that turns this trip into four days if you want it.

    • On footShort, at the animals' pace

  3. Day 03

One more morning, then the road home

    Labahe → Chengdu

A final morning session in the reserve. For anyone carrying a bird interest as well, the day can start before dawn above the cable car, where Chinese monal — the endemic bird of these heights — is the prize.

After midday the road runs back to Chengdu, where the tour ends in the evening. If the Wawushan day appeals, say so in the enquiry and the outline comes back as four days, priced.

The optional early start on Day 03 comes up here, for Chinese monal — the endemic bird most visitors to Labahe never schedule.

A high chance means we would expect it across three days in season, not that it is guaranteed on yours. Weather and the animals themselves all get a vote.
