Wildlife / Mammal tour

Classic wildlife tour

The Sichuan mammal tour.

Three reserves in one line north of Chengdu, built around the mammals this range is known for — Sichuan takin, golden snub-nosed monkeys, red panda — and led throughout by a local wildlife guide.

Why this route

One line, not a loop of highlights.

Rhododendrons flowering among spring foliage inside Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, Sichuan
Rhododendrons in flower, Tangjiahe Nature Reserve · Minshan range

Two of these three reserves are panda habitat with the same working parts: a valley road, a few trails, and animals that are resident, uncollared and entirely uninterested in your arrival. You do not go to Tangjiahe or Labahe to see a panda. You go for the rest of the forest, which turns up far more often.

The third stop is different. The Baihe valley north of Jiuzhai is the one place on the route where a single species can be planned for: Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys, in troops, at a distance the camera can use. That is why it sits in the middle of the week rather than at the end — it is the day you can count on, and the forests either side of it are the days you cannot.

The order also follows the road. The reserves are far apart, and one day of this itinerary is almost entirely driving. Saying so at the start is better than discovering it on Day 04.

The route

Day by day

The eight days.

Day 00 is the arrival day, so there are seven working days and seven nights. Each day lists where you sleep, how much road there is, and what the walking actually asks of you.

  1. Day 00

    Arrive in Chengdu

    Chengdu

Everyone arrives independently, and the first night is yours to arrange. We will tell you which part of the city puts you closest to the road out in the morning, and hold a room for you if you would rather not choose.

If the group is large enough to warrant one, we brief on the tour late in the afternoon or in the evening, once the last flight is in.

    • BriefingLate afternoon or evening, group-dependent
  2. Day 01

    Into the Minshan range

    Chengdu → Tangjiahe

We leave Chengdu early and drive north to Tangjiahe, at the northern end of the Giant Panda National Park's Sichuan section. It is four to five hours of road, arriving around midday for lunch before we check in — inside the reserve, not at its gate.

The afternoon is a full working session. Our own vehicle takes us along the park's valley roads, which run about sixty kilometres from end to end, stopping wherever the ground looks worth stopping for. Staying inside the reserve is what buys the evening: a second session before dark and, when the reserve allows it, a night tour.

    • On footShort stops, no fixed distance
    Sleeping inside the reserve

The hotel is inside Tangjiahe, the restaurant has a short menu and there are no shops. Bring what you need for two days, including anything you want at breakfast. The kitchen is simple by circumstance rather than by choice.

  3. Day 02

    A full day, then north

    Tangjiahe → Jiuzhai

A full day inside Tangjiahe. The main valley first, and if the morning has gone well, the east valley afterwards — a different set of edges and a different set of animals. Short flights of stairs are involved; this is a day of stopping rather than covering ground. The night tour is available again.

Late in the afternoon we check out and drive north, with a stop at Qingxi Town on the way, reaching the town at Jiuzhai in the evening. Two nights in the same hotel there.

  4. Day 03

    The monkey valley

    Jiuzhai · Baihe valley

The Baihe valley is the one place on this route where a day can be aimed at a single species. Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys use the valley in troops, and the walking is short — flights of stairs, nothing sustained — which leaves the time where it matters: on the animals, with the camera up, for as long as they stay.

  5. The route turns south

The monkey valley is the day you can count on. The forests either side of it are the days you cannot.

  6. Day 04

Qingcheng Mountain at Dujiangyan · the road south

This is a driving day and the itinerary does not dress it up. A morning search before we leave, then the road out after nine — south past Dujiangyan and into the Qionglai range, where Labahe sits.

We check in at the hotel inside the reserve in the late afternoon. The evening is for arriving properly rather than for chasing a sighting.

  7. Day 05

    Above the cable car

    Labahe · Jiaoshan

A full day inside Labahe, using the cable car to reach the higher ground on Jiaoshan. The walking above the top station is on paved stairs, but altitude rather than gradient is what makes it hard — this is the part of the trip that sits above 3,000 metres.

Chinese monal is the bird most people come to Labahe for, and above the cable car the chance of one is good. Himalayan griffon and blue sheep are the other possibilities on the open ground here.

  8. Day 06

Another day in the same forest

    Labahe

A second full day at Labahe, unchanged in plan and deliberately so. The first day teaches you the ground; the second is when you use it.

Nothing about the odds improves with the extra day. The time does.

    • OvernightInside Labahe reserve
  9. Day 07

    The panda base, then home

    Labahe → Ya'an → Chengdu

We drive back towards Chengdu, with an optional stop at the panda base at Ya'an — a working captive facility, quieter than the Chengdu base, and the closest thing on this route to a guaranteed panda.

Arrival in downtown Chengdu is late in the afternoon, where the tour ends.

Species odds

What the forests actually offer.

These are the field estimates we plan around for these three reserves — not a survey and not a promise. Each list runs from what you would expect to what would be a stroke of luck.

Tangjiahe

Minshan range · two days, one night inside the reserve

High
Sichuan takin · Reeves's muntjac · Tibetan macaque
Medium
Chinese goral · wild boar · leopard cat · masked palm civet
Low
Golden snub-nosed monkey · Asiatic black bear · yellow-throated marten · Eurasian otter · hog-nosed badger · Chinese tufted deer · golden pheasant
Rare
Giant panda · forest musk deer · clouded leopard

A night tour is available from the reserve hotel, weather and park permission allowing.

Jiuzhai · Baihe

the monkey valley · one day

High
Golden snub-nosed monkey

A single-species day by design. The troop's movements decide the morning; nothing else in the valley is promised.

Labahe

Qionglai range · three nights inside the reserve

High
Tibetan macaque · red panda · sambar
Medium
Chinese monal · Himalayan griffon · Himalayan blue sheep · Lady Amherst's pheasant · Sichuan takin · leopard cat
Low
Asiatic black bear · golden snub-nosed monkey · forest musk deer
Rare
Giant panda

The panda line is the good news in this table: Labahe recorded more than one sighting in April and May 2025. It is still a rare event and no trip should be built on it.

A high chance means we would expect it on a two-day visit, not that it is guaranteed on yours. Weather, road access and the animals themselves all get a vote.

Before you commit

What the week asks of you.

None of this is difficult, but all of it is worth knowing before you commit to the dates.

The reserve hotels are simple

Four of the seven nights are inside a reserve, where there is one hotel, a short menu and nowhere to buy anything. Bring what you cannot do without.

Above 3,000 m, stairs count as climbing

Jiaoshan is the high point of the week and the cable car does most of the work. The last stretch is paved, steep and thin on oxygen.

One day is almost entirely road

Day 04 connects Jiuzhai to Labahe. There is no shorter way to do it, and the drive is the price of putting three reserves in one line.

Arrival night is not included

Day 00 is your own hotel. We will point you at the right part of Chengdu for an early start, and book it for you if you prefer.

Nothing here is a guarantee

What we can control is the hour of day, the length of the stay and the guide's reading of the ground. What we cannot control is the animal.
