A week above four thousand metres.
Angsai is the best place in Asia to look for snow leopard, and the animal you will almost certainly photograph there is this one.

One valley, two big cats, and a lot of empty ridge.
Angsai sits in Zadoi county, Yushu prefecture, inside the Lancang River source park of Sanjiangyuan National Park. The gorge is Cretaceous red sandstone — 300 km² of it, the most complete plateau danxia landscape in China — cut by the upper Mekong and fringed with the tallest stands of large-fruited juniper anywhere. It is also one of the few places on earth where snow leopard and common leopard share a valley.
Long-term work by Peking University and the Shan Shui conservation centre has identified 85 individual snow leopards and 12 common leopards here. That is a world-class density and it still means a great deal of walking past rocks that contain nothing. Roughly 300 vertebrate species are recorded in the gorge; 72 infrared cameras run a permanent monitoring grid. The cats are real and resident. They are not on a schedule.
How we would build the days.
- Two nights in Yushu before anything
3,680 m is where the trip is decided. Fly in, sleep, eat, walk gently. Groups that drive straight up to the gorge on arrival day spend the next two days with headaches instead of binoculars.
- Up the valley, slowly
The road from Yushu to Angsai township is about 190 km and takes three to four hours; from the township to a homestay is another thirty minutes to two hours, mostly gravel. Snow and ice add three to four hours without warning.
- Scan at dawn, read sign at midday
Snow leopard hunting peaks in the first and last light. The middle of the day belongs to tracks, scrapes, scent marks and the patient business of working out which ridge was used last night.
- Accept the arithmetic
A good week is not a guaranteed cat. Plenty of well-run trips end with blue sheep, blood pheasant, white-lipped deer, fresh pugmarks in a gully and no sighting at all. We would rather say that now than explain it on the last evening.
What the park actually asks.
Currently paused
The community snow-leopard programme — marketed as Valley of the Cats — states on its own site that bookings are suspended while the project is being restructured, with no reopening date given. Anyone selling you a seat this winter is either selling something else or has not checked. We confirm status with the operator before quoting a date.
Permit, not ticket
There is no gate and no admission fee on the gorge. Access runs through a licensed local guide, a community homestay and an entry permit, with group numbers capped. Self-driving into the gorge is not permitted; vehicles stay in Yushu or Zadoi and the guide collects you.
What it costs, when it runs
The published rate before suspension was ¥1,000 per vehicle per day and ¥350 per person per day, with a four-day, three-night minimum — three people for four days came to ¥8,200. All of it stays in the community: 45% to the guide, 45% to public projects, 10% to a conservation fund. Treat those figures as a starting point, not a quote.
Who may go
The programme takes children from six years old. Under the National Park Law, which came into force on 1 January 2026, core protection areas are closed to human activity in principle and general control areas carry visitor caps and published behaviour rules. Wandering off the licensed route is not a grey area.
Ready to take it further?
Tell us your dates, how the group handles altitude and whether a sighting is the whole point or the landscape is enough. With the community programme paused, we would look at the licensed trekking and overland routes launched in the gorge in September 2026 — same valley, same guides, different product. The cranes of Poyang are the other winter journey.
