Longji Rice Terraces 004

A walking trip with a sense of place.

Longji works best when you choose a village base before choosing a path. Ping’an, the Ancient Zhuang Village and the Jinkeng/Dazhai area offer different approaches to terrace walking. A photograph suggests an open landscape, but daily movement involves steps, narrow paths and substantial changes in height. An overnight usually gives the visit a better rhythm than a hurried return from Guilin or Yangshuo.

The options below are planning suggestions, not fixed departures. Walking time, entry arrangements and the final route are confirmed for your dates and group. A half-day or full-day label describes the proposed outing, not a guaranteed trail duration.

Choose the walk that fits.

Ping’an viewpoint circuit

Suggested half-day walking · moderate steps

Link selected viewpoints above the village and return for a meal. This gives first-time visitors a clear terrace-and-village experience without committing to a long transfer between walking areas. The exact loop should follow open paths and the weather.

Jinkeng and Dazhai

Suggested full day with breaks · moderate to demanding

Choose one coherent set of viewpoints rather than trying to reach every named summit. Ask whether cable-car access improves the day for your group, and confirm how much climbing remains between the upper station, viewpoints and accommodation.

Village-to-village walking

A locally checked day route · variable effort

Explore a connection involving village paths only after a local guide verifies the line, conditions and pickup. Do not assume a continuous scenic trail exists between every area shown close together on a tourist map.

Know before you go.

Choose the season for the landscape

Water-filled terraces, green growth and harvest colour are different experiences. Farming schedules vary by village, weather and year, so avoid booking an exact crop appearance from a generic monthly calendar. Mist can be beautiful but may obscure the wide views.

Stay where you intend to walk

A hillside guesthouse can place you close to the fields, but may require carrying bags up steps. Confirm luggage assistance, room access, heating or cooling and the meeting point for transport. A hotel advertised as being in Longji may still be far from your selected trail.

Respect working fields

Terrace banks and irrigation channels belong to a functioning agricultural landscape. Use established paths, ask before photographing people at close range and do not step into planted fields for a photograph. Village time should include daily life rather than only scenic platforms.

Combine with Guilin and Yangshuo

Allow a distinct Longji chapter before or after the karst country. Long transfers reduce actual walking time, so keep the arrival afternoon light and reserve the main route for the following morning. Bring shoes with grip: damp stone and mud make short descents slow.

A possible journey.

This is an itinerary outline to adapt around your arrival, preferred pace and available walking days. Accommodation, transfers, entry and guiding are confirmed in a written trip proposal.

  1. Travel from Guilin, settle into the chosen village and take a short orientation walk.
  2. Walk a locally verified terrace route with time for lunch and village visits; return to the same base or meet a pre-arranged transfer.
  3. Continue to Yangshuo for a contrasting landscape and a gentler recovery day.

Prepare for the actual route.

Bring broken-in walking shoes with grip, a small daypack, water, a weather-appropriate layer, rain protection and sun protection. Carry any personal medication and a charged phone; download your hotel address and meeting point for offline use. Let us know if long steps, uneven ground or a sustained descent are a concern.

For a useful quote, tell us your travel dates, group size, recent walking experience, preferred accommodation and whether you want a guide, transfers and luggage support. Ask the proposal to distinguish entrance fees, cableways, meals, guide service and optional activities. No price or inclusion is implied by this guide.

Read our China walking and trekking packing guide for the broader journey, then adjust it to this route rather than packing for an expedition by default.

Your questions, answered.

Ping’an or Dazhai?

Choose by walking preference and accommodation location rather than a universal ranking. Ping’an suits a compact village-based plan; Jinkeng offers a broader area that needs more deliberate route selection.

Can we visit in one day?

Yes, but transfers may dominate. An overnight allows a more relaxed walk and more than one chance of clear views.

Is it flat walking through fields?

No. The terraces are on hillsides. Expect steps and elevation even when the route is described as a countryside walk.

Keep exploring on foot.
